MODG warden says developments with mining project are fantastic

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says drilling at the site of a proposed mining project has produced phenomenal test results.

Representatives with Anaconda Mining Inc. have already filed their updated technical report for their proposed 125-hectare mine in Goldboro.

Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, says company reps have been doing extensive drilling in the area.

After January’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Pitts said things are very positive.

“They’ve made some magnificent strides, big strides the last little while, and they continue to do so,” he said. “They have a plan going forward- they’ll be filing their plan, hopefully, late spring (or) early summer, and we’re looking forward to them setting down roots in our municipality.”

Pitts said company reps held a meeting in the community Tuesday night.

He said the project will be a major boost to employment in the area.

“You’re looking at approximately 300-400 jobs during construction,” he said. “Their numbers are approximately 200 permanent, full-time production jobs.”

Pitts said construction could start as early as next winter.
