Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cabot Highlanders host the Fundy Thunder in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (2-18-1) are last in the eight-team league with five points, six points back of Cape Breton for seventh; the Thunder (14-8-1), who have won the first three games in the five-game season series, are third with 29 points.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6:30 p.m.

 

The Cape Breton Panthers have a pair of weekend road games in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

They take on Halifax in Bedford.

The Panthers (11-5-4), winless in four straight regular season games, are third in the seven-team league with 26 points, eight points behind Halifax (15-2-4) for second, and four points ahead of the fourth-place Lightning.

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams- Halifax won one, and they split the other two.

Game time is 4 p.m.

Cape Breton plays the Penguins in Bedford Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas are home for two weekend home games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host the Dartmouth Whalers.

The Novas (11-11-1), winners of their last five, are sixth in the 12-team league with 23 points, three points behind Cole Harbour for fifth, and a point ahead of seventh-place East Hants; the Whalers (5-18-0) are last with 10 points.

The teams have split the first two games in the three-game season series.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m.

The Novas host Pictou Co. in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Heatherton Warriors play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 7 p.m. and the County Outlaws take on the St. Croix Angels at 8:45 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams play their second home games against New Brunswick opponents in as many nights.

UPDATED: Tonight’s QMJHL game between the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and Acadie-Bathurst Titan has been postponed to a later date due to an electrical issue with the ice plant at Centre 200, the home arena of the Screaming Eagles. A new date for the game will be determined and announced at a later time.

 

The Halifax Mooseheads, who beat Acadie-Bathurst Friday night, host Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart and the Moncton Wildcats at Scotiabank Centre.

The Mooseheads, ranked eighth in the country, have won three of the first four games in their nine-game season series against the Wildcats.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The StFX women’s hockey team hosts the Moncton Blue Eagles in AUS play.

The X-Women (13-5-3), who have won back-to-back games and have already clinched a playoff spot, are second in the eight-team conference with 29 points, four points up on third-place Saint Mary’s; they’re ranked seventh in the country; the Blue Eagles (9-11-1) are sixth with 19 points.

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams- Moncton has won two of the first three.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

 

The StFX track and field teams are in action.

The X-Men and X-Women are competing at the Athletics NS Open in Halifax.
