Hwy. 104 twinning project receives environmental approval

The province’s environment minister has approved the twinning of Hwy. 104 between Antigonish and Sutherlands River.

Officials with the province’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal registered the 38-kilometre twinning project for environmental assessment in December.

In a decision released Tuesday, Margaret Miller, the provincial environment minister, says conditions include the development of a wildlife management plan to protect birds and plants, dust control and noise monitoring during construction.

Miller says any adverse effects of the project can be mitigated through terms and conditions established by department officials.

Provincial officials say they expect to announce the winner of the bid for the project in early 2020; work is expected to be done by the end of 2023.
