StFX AUT president says Coady cuts will have a big impact

The president of the StFX Association of University Teachers says cuts at the Coady International Institute will have a significant impact.

University officials say $3 million of the Coady’s $7 million budget comes from officials with the federal government, and they were advised that funding wouldn’t be renewed in the fall of 2018.

Mary Oxner, the president of the StFX AUT, tells The Hawk it’s early to say what voluntary and forced layoffs will mean for programming at this point.

“Without a doubt, there would be an impact- what that impact (will) look like, ideally, would have to be determined by the leadership at the Coady,” she says. “Nonetheless, there will be fewer people to deliver programs and certificates that they would normally generate.”

Oxner says the loss of the Coady’s flagship Diploma Program for 2019 will be felt on campus.

She says the changes will have a huge impact.

“It will change the dynamic in 2019 of people on campus,” she says. “The Diploma Program participants would come in July, leave in December, (and) have a huge impact on our fall convocation and also on the whole atmosphere on campus.”

Oxner says it’s a tough time for their members, who are already working in a difficult environment.

A university spokesperson says the number of voluntary and involuntary layoffs or early retirements is still being considered.
