NOTE: Highlanders’ game is cancelled

The Cabot Highlanders play the first of back-to-back home games in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

They host the Cape Breton Jets in a match-up of teams at the bottom of the standings in the eight-team league; the Highlanders (2-20-3) are last with seven points, eight points back of the Jets (6-21-3), who have won the first four games in the five-game season series, for seventh.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 7:30 p.m.

The Highlanders host the Basin Armada in Antigonish Sunday afternoon.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League kick off their respective best-of-five, opening round playoff series.

The Northern Selects host the Penguins at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre at 12:30 p.m.

The Selects (19-1-4), who had one regular season loss, finished in top spot in the seven-team league with 42 points; the last-place Penguins (1-20-3) had five points.

The Selects swept the four-game season series between the teams.

The Cape Breton Panthers visit Halifax at 3:30 p.m.

The Panthers (13-6-5) finished third with 31 points; Halifax (18-2-4), who won the four-game season series with two wins and two ties, was second with 40 points.

Games two in both series are Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas play the first of back-to-back games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They visit the Gulls.

The Novas (15-15-1), who have lost two of their last three, are seventh in the 12-team league with 31 points, two points behind Pictou Co. for sixth, and three points ahead of eighth-place East Hants; the Gulls (28-2-1) are in top spot with 57 points.

It’s the third and final regular season game between the teams; the Gulls won the first two.

Game time is 2 p.m.

The Novas play their final regular season game when they host the Cougars in Antigonish Sunday morning.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals will play in the consolation final in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League playoffs in Truro.

The Royals will meet North Nova at 6:00pm

 

The 2018-19 Antigonish Rural League playoffs get underway at the Antigonish Arena.

The County Outlaws take on the Heatherton Warriors at 7 p.m.; the St. Croix Angels play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:30 p.m.

Games two in both first-round, best-of-seven series are Feb. 23.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are back in action.

The Halifax Mooseheads, coming off a home win against Gatineau Friday night, host the Charlottetown Islanders at 4:30 p.m.

The Mooseheads have won six of the first seven games in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division teams.

Cape Breton West Islander Dell Welton has been called up and will play with the Islanders.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, who won against the Armada on the road Friday night, continue their road trip through Quebec when they visit the Drummondville Voltigeurs at 8 p.m.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; Drummondville won the first 3-2 in a shootout in Sydney Feb. 6.

The Screaming Eagles play their third road game in as many days when they visit Sherbrooke Sunday afternoon.

 

Inverness’ Kenzie MacPhail and Team Nova Scotia open preliminary round play in men’s hockey at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

They take on Team Ontario at 10:30 p.m.

Team Nova Scotia faces Team Quebec Sunday afternoon; the qualification round gets underway Tuesday.

 

The StFX basketball teams finish off their AUS home-and-home series against the Cape Breton Capers at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.

Cape Breton won their games against both StFX teams in Sydney Thursday.

The X-Men (6-12), who have lost back-to-back games, are fifth in the eight-team conference with 20 points, four points behind the Capers (8-10), and four points ahead of sixth-place Memorial.

Cape Breton has won two of the first three games in the four-game season series.

The X-Women (0-18), who are winless, are last in their eight-team conference, eight points behind Saint Mary’s for seventh; the Capers (16-2), who have won the first three games in the four-game season series, are in top spot with 42 points.

The women tip off at 6 p.m.; the men get underway at 8 p.m.

 

The Guysborough Academy Blue Eagles are hosting the NSSAF Div. 2 Northumberland Region boys basketball championship.

Six teams in two divisions are competing for the regional banner.

The Strait Highland Volleyball Club will host the first-ever U18 ERREA CUP at East Antigonish Education Centre-Academy in Monastery.

10 of the top teams from the Maritimes will compete in the two-day event.

Play starts at 12 p.m.
