Local sports preview (Sunday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders host the Valley Wildcats in game two of their best-of-five, first-round series in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoffs.

The Wildcats won the series opener in Port Hood Saturday night.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 12 p.m.

The series shifts to Berwick for game three Friday night.

 

The semi-final match-ups have been set at the NSSAF Div. 2 high school hockey regional playoffs at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood.

Dalbrae will meet Richmond at 2:30 and in the second semi, Inverness/Baddeck will face-off with SAERC at 4.

The Championship Game will be played at 7.

 

The Cabot Highlanders host the Kings for the second time in as many days in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders won Saturday night’s game in Port Hawkesbury.

The Highlanders are last in the eight-team league; the Kings are fourth.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 12 p.m.

 

The StFX women’s hockey team opens the AUS final against the St. Thomas Tommies on road.

The teams finished at the top of the eight-team conference at the end of the regular season- the X-Women (18-7-3) were second with 39 points, six points back of the first-place Tommies (22-5-1).

The teams split their four regular season games.

StFX swept Saint Mary’s in their best-of-three conference semi-final to advance; St. Thomas swept UNB.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The winner will have a chance to win the conference title when the series shifts to Antigonish for game two Tuesday night.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles host Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart and the Moncton Wildcats.

The Screaming Eagles have a slight 4-3 edge through the first seven games of the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 4 p.m.

The Halifax Mooseheads visit the Val-d’Or Foreurs.

It’s the second road game in as many days for the Mooseheads, who lost against the league-leading Huskies in Rouyn-Noranda Saturday night.

Halifax is third in the 18-team league, and ranked fifth in the country.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; the Mooseheads won the first 6-2 at home in November.

Game time is 5 p.m.
