Officials with a local affordable housing organization say they’ve achieved their fundraising goal.
Antigonish Affordable Housing Society reps started fundraising for the Housing for Hope campaign in Feb. 2018.
They had a goal of $250,000 to build Riverside Estates, their 14-unit affordable housing multi-family complex on Hope Lane which officially opened in October.
Colleen Cameron, the society’s chair, tells The Hawk they’ll still be fundraising even though they reached their goal.
“We will continue to be looking for support in helping us to reduce our debt (and) our mortgage so that we can refinance and start on other initiatives,” she says. “We are hoping that will happen in the next few years.”
Cameron says they need to continue fundraising to make sure rent stays below market value.
She says they have to come up with ways to pay their bills.
“We don’t have many options for covering some of our costs, particularly related to our vision of the community navigator.”
Cameron says they received tremendous support from Antigonish residents and local business owners.
