Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Strait Pirates meet the Miners in Membertou for game four of their Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League playoff series.

The Pirates lead the best-of-seven, Sid Rowe Division final 3-0 after a win in game three in Port Hawkesbury Friday night.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Pirates can advance to the league final with a win; a loss, and the series returns to Port Hawkesbury for game five Tuesday night.

 

The Cabot Highlanders kick off their Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League playoff series on home ice.

They host the Basin Armada.

The Highlanders (4-27-4), losers of five straight to close out the regular season, finished last in the eight-team league with 12 points; the Armada (27-8-0), who won all five games in the season series between the teams, were first with 54 points.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6:30 p.m.

The winner of game one will have a chance to sweep the best-of-three series, and advance to provincials when the series shifts to Bedford for game two March 30.

 

The Northern Selects have a chance to repeat as Nova Scotia Female Midget ‘AAA’ hockey league champions when they visit Halifax in game three of the league final.

The Selects won the opening two games and lost the third yesterday in the best-of-five second-round series in New Glasgow last weekend.

Game time is 3:30 p.m.

A Selects’ win sends them to atlantics in Bathurst in two weeks.

A loss extends the series to game five.

 

The Antigonish Rural League playoff series between the Pleasantdale Panthers and St. Croix Angels comes down to a seventh and deciding game.

Pleasantdale won the first three games of the best-of-seven, league semi-final; St. Croix stormed back with three straight wins to avoid elimination and force game seven.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 7 p.m.

The winner advances to face Heatherton in the league final.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams continue their first-round playoff series.

The Halifax Mooseheads host the Quebec Remparts in game two at Scotiabank Centre at 7 p.m.

The Remparts won Friday night’s series opener in Halifax.

The series shifts to Quebec for game three Tuesday night.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles visit the Charlottetown Islanders in game two at 7:30 p.m.

The Islanders won the series opener in Charlottetown Friday night.

Game three will be in Sydney Tuesday night.
