The principal of the Nova Scotia Community College Strait Area Campus says he is excited about a new project.
Premier Stephen McNeil announced new NSCC capital projects for three campuses across the province on Monday.
McNeil says a new student residence building is coming to NSCC in Port Hawkesbury.
Tom Gunn, Principal of the NSCC Strait Area Campus, tells The Hawk more students are coming to Port Hawkesbury for their education.
“Affordable housing has been an ongoing issue for our students” he said. “We have more and more students who are traveling to Port Hawkesbury to get the training and education that they need and they really need good, healthy, affordable housing and this is a big step in that direction.”
Gunn says construction should start soon.
Gunn says this project is years in the making.
“Pretty excited, we have been working on this project for many, many years and we had a lot of support in the strait area for it so we’re excited the premier has finally made the announcement.”
He says the goal is to open the residence by September of 2020.
NSCC officials say the twenty-thousand square foot residence is expected to cost roughly seven-million dollars.
They say the residence will have 51 beds.
