Municipal councillors in Antigonish Co. have passed their latest capital budget.
They approved the 2019-20 document at April’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night.
After the meeting, Owen McCarron, the warden of Antigonish Co., said there is a little more than $2 million for a number of projects in the current fiscal year.
“One will be the North Grant water project, which we’re hoping to get some cost-sharing from the federal and provincial governments under infrastructure,” he said. “We’re looking at some expansion to our parking lot here at the municipal office, so that’s one of the other ones- another is a water looping project, which will help take some of the pressure off some of the water line breakages, (so) when we have a breakage, we’ll actually be able to feed water back a different direction.”
McCarron said they continue to work on their operating budget.
He said they hope to be in a position to pass it soon.
“Different departments are getting their estimates in for the upcoming year,” he said. “It’s our hope and goal to have the budget and tax rates struck by our May council meeting.”
McCarron said their goal is to keep their residential and commercial tax rates the same as they were in 2018-19.
He said the capital budget is part of their overall operating budget, but they passed it early because they wanted to get the jump on some of the projects.
