Man charged in Operation Halfpenny receives four years behind bars

A suspect from the area arrested following an alleged conspiracy to import cocaine has been sentenced to prison time.

Donald Gordon Mugford, 37, of Baddeck was originally charged with five drug-related offences, including conspiracy to import cocaine and trafficking cocaine.

Mugford pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to traffic cocaine in the case; a Nova Scotia Supreme Court justice accepted a joint Crown and defence recommendation for a four-year prison term in an April 11 decision.

He also received a 10-year weapons ban.

Police say they made six arrests in connection with Operation Halfpenny in Feb. 2017.

They say officers discovered a plot to import more than tonne of Colombian cocaine a year-and-a-half earlier.
