Municipal officials mark National Day of Mourning

The CAO of Inverness Co. says safety is important in the workplace.

Keith MacDonald says we should all take a closer look at what risks we have in our work environment.

The National Day of Mourning will be observed across Canada on Sunday and it’s to honour those who have lost their lives or suffered illness due to workplace related incidents.

MacDonald tells The Hawk he is asking Inverness County staff and others to take a moment of silence this weekend.

“This year it falls on a Sunday so our staff do not have an event scheduled for Sunday April 28th” he said. “We have asked them to try to reserve a moment of silence (at) eleven on that morning.”

MacDonald says during the week they will also celebrate workers that help keep the county office safe.

He say municipality staff will have learning opportunities throughout occupational safety and health week in May.

“We’re going to have some guest speakers talking about ways to help improve safety within the work place, we’re also going to have some sessions on educating our staff on legislation that helps protect them.”

MacDonald says occupational safety and health week runs from May 5th to 11th.
