Fishermen say local lobster season is going well so far

The President of the Gulf Nova Scotia Bonafide Fishermen’s Association says the local lobster fishing season seems to be going well.

Duane Boudreau says catches are up in the 2019 season compared to 2018.

Boudreau tells The Hawk they were delayed to start the season, but three days have been added on at the end.

“We were expecting to have to have to put in a formal request, but enough of the fishing association requested it on our phone calls,” he says. “It was granted automatically.”

Boudreau says the season got underway late because of high winds, which is a problem they face at the start of most seasons.

He says things have been going well since they got out on the water.

“So far, so good,” he says. “We haven’t had any reports of any unhappy fishermen, so that’s a good thing.”

Prices at the wharf are $6/pound for canners and $6.75/pound for markets.
