Group wants to bring the Green New Deal to Antigonish.

A group in Antigonish is meeting tonight to discuss a Canadian version of the Green New Deal.

They are part of the Pact for a Green New Deal, a group re-imagining the proposed Green New Deal stimulus package, in the US, for Canada.

The US version was defeated in the US Senate, but is still before the US House of Representatives.

David Eliot is one of the organizers of the Antigonish chapter.

Eliot tells the Hawk tonight is about involving as many community members as possible.

“The import thing is that this is a grassroots movement that comes from the people who are most effected by it. So, we really want to be able to put into the hands of the people who make decisions at the end of the day what the will of the people is, and really try to foster direct democracy.”

The, town hall style, meeting will include a short talk about the Green New Deal and small group discussions on what a Canadian Green New Deal framework would look like.

The event is Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the People’s Place Library in Antigonish.
