I just returned yesterday from a trip to Saint John where there is an outbreak of the measles (at the time I’m writing this, there are 11 confirmed cases)
People born between 1970 and the early 1990s may only have 1 of the 2 recommended MMR shots.
I’m in the at risk age range (38)
Officials say that people who aren’t vaccinated or are not immune to measles have a 90% chance of contracting it if they’re exposed to the virus.
Prior to leaving, I attempted to get the vaccine (MMR) and had a bit of trouble.
The issue was, I wasn’t able to access my “baby” medical records. I am no longer a patient with my childhood family doctor and my records have been destroyed. By the time I found that out, it was too late. So. What do you do if you want the vaccine?
First, go through any records that you have on hand or ask your parents if you are fully vaccinated.
You can also check with your doctor (or former doctor) or the Nova Scotia Health Authority to see if they have a record.
If you still come up with nothing like me, there is no harm in getting the vaccine just in case. Contact your family doctor if you were born after 1970, you are eligible to receive 2 (free) doses of the MMR vaccine. If you don’t have a family doctor, contact the Nova Scotia Health Authority to find out where to go.
