Margaree lighthouses get heritage designation

A pair of Inverness Co. lighthouses have received federal heritage designation.

The Margaree Harbour Front Lighthouse and Rear Range Lighthouse, which are 65 metres apart, were built to guide vessels coming to Margaree Harbour from the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1900.

The traditional wooden towers have guided members of the local and regional commercial fishery and recreational boat traffic.

Rodger Cuzner, the MP for Cape Breton-Canso, announced the designation Friday.
