NDP candidate says climate change, local issues prompted her to run

A local NDP candidate says the environment is a major reason she decided to run in the upcoming federal election.

New Democrats in Central Nova acclaimed Betsy MacDonald, an Antigonish native and StFX grad who works as an outreach worker for the party, at a nomination meeting Saturday.

MacDonald tells The Hawk a key issue in the October election will be climate change.

“I have a seven-year-old daughter- I’m very concerned about her future,” she says. “The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report gives us just 11 years to make some pretty drastic changes.”

MacDonald says the Hwy. 104 twinning project between Antigonish and Sutherlands River and the Boat Harbour effluent plant in Pictou Co. are two local issues she’s heard a lot about from residents.

She says the Boat Harbour treatment facility should be closed by the original deadline- not given an extension- and the P3 funding model is unacceptable for twinning the highway.

MacDonald says she’ll be knocking on doors soon.

“Right now, it’s really about getting out on the doorsteps, talking with people, (and) listening to constituents about what matters to them.”

MacDonald says it’s time to have conversations with residents about what they want from officials with the federal government in Central Nova, and across the country.
