Antigonish Co. officials say a decision on their courthouse will be made shortly.
They issued a request for proposals for the sale of the building on Main St. in Antigonish in March.
Nicole Rovers with the Antigonish Barristers Association made a presentation on the importance of keeping a Supreme Court facility in the local area at June’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night.
After, Owen McCarron, the warden of Antigonish Co., said Rovers raised a number of valid points, and they’ll take those points into consideration.
“We, as a municipality, have to look at the long-term (and) what’s the best for the overall community,” he said. “We heard the submission in terms of the only jury trial facility in this area, and that’s certainly an important piece.”
McCarron said the original RFP came with a restriction- the building can’t be demolished, and the exterior and footprint can’t be significantly altered.
He said they’ll make a decision soon.
“We’re taking (everything) into consideration,” he said. “Within a week, we’ll have a final decision on the courthouse situation.”
McCarron said they received a number of proposals, and some included keeping the building as a courthouse.
