The warden of Antigonish Co. says municipal officials hope something is done at a dangerous intersection before traffic picks up for the summer.
Councillors first raised concerns with the Trunk 4 intersection in the Beech Hill area in Sept. 2017; it’s been the site of numerous crashes and near misses since it re-opened to four-way traffic in Oct. 2016.
There was another collision at the intersection Friday.
After June’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, the municipality’s warden, said they’d be happy with a temporary fix at this point.
“If there was sort of an interim solution by the province, we’d be quite happy as a municipality,” he said. “Certainly, we’ve reached out to the province again to see if there (are) some possibilities, and we’re just waiting (for) some information back from them.”
Officials with the province’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal did a traffic study in the area; the results were not released.
McCarron said the issue needs to be addressed soon.
“It’s a busy intersection and people seem to, I don’t know, just lose sight of traffic somehow,” he said. “We’re obviously concerned about it, and we’re just hopeful that’s there’s nothing more serious (that) happens in that intersection.”
McCarron said they understand creating a different type of intersection takes time, but there is a lot of concern with the current set-up.
He said they hope something is done before the heavy summer traffic season.
