Opposition Leader says accessibility issues “final straw” for Paon

Cape Breton-Richmond MLA Alana Paon has been removed from the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Caucus for, what the Opposition Party Leader says was, a number of issues.

Tim Houston says Paon’s refusal bring her constituency office up accessibility standards was the last straw.

“There has been a number of issues around the management of her constituency office,” he says. “There’s been a number of concerns raised about her attendance in the constituency, there’s been issues with her apartment.”

He says he has fielded complaints from about a dozen people who say Paon isn’t spending enough time in her constituency.

Houston says, they had been working on the issues with Paon.

“I’ve met with her on a number of occasions to discuss these issues, and we just weren’t seeing any progress,” he says. “Any respect for the position of being an MLA.”

Houston says her comments towards the Speaker and House of Assembly Management Commission were unfair.

“She’s had a difficult, quite frankly an unacceptable, attitude towards the Speaker’s Office and the rules that all other MLAs comply with,” he says. “Predominately, but not exclusively, pertaining to the management of her constituency office and the apartment.”

Houston says he informed Paon that she would be removed from caucus in a phone call Monday morning.
