The federal government is making some changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program for rural areas.
Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu says employers can temporarily increase their allowable share of temporary foreign workers from 10% to 15% of their workforce in eligible rural regions.
These measures could begin as early as April 1st and will remain in place until March 31, 2027.
The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is applauding the move.
The CFIB says any measure that prevents businesses from losing experienced, trained workers is a positive one.
The group says there are currently 1.3 million temporary work permits set to expire in 2026.
