Local QMJHL team gets new name

Cape Breton’s QMJHL team has got a new name.

They’re no longer the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, they’re now the Cape Breton Eagles.

At a press conference this morning the organization announced they would be changing their name, and unveiled an updated logo, a simple eagle’s head.

Team President Gerard Shaw tells The Hawk it was time to make a change.

“Because the organizational changes happened, we thought ‘time for a re-branding change,’ and to really start a change in the community, revitalizing the team in the community and bringing the passion back that we lost,” he says. “We want to get to Port Hawkesbury so when you’re coming over the causeway, [you see] that this is the home of the Eagles.”

Shaw says they’ve got new jerseys, new ice dressing and signage, and new social media to reflect the change.

He says they’ll be updating Centre 200 with the new logo over the next few weeks.

  • Kelly MacMillan lives in Port Hawkesbury with her husband and son. She has been part of the team at 101.5 The Hawk for more than 25 years, sharing stories from around the region. You can join her weekdays from 10am until 2pm.
