Suspect in Inverness Co. home invasion elects judge-only trial

A woman from Sydney Mines facing three charges after a home invasion in Inverness Co. is scheduled to return to court in January.

Jessica Carolanne Leroy, 23, who has been charged with break-and-enter to a residence, assault with a weapon and resisting arrest, elected a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge-alone trial during an election-and-plea hearing Thursday.

Leroy is expected for a preliminary inquiry, which will determine if there’s enough evidence to send her case to trial, in Wagmatcook Provincial Court Jan. 22.

RCMP say a woman and three men went to a home on Subdivision Rd. in Waycobah in May 2018; there was an altercation, and bear spray was used.

They say another woman was injured when she was assaulted with a rock.

Police say they arrested the woman following a short foot chase; she was treated for minor injuries, spent the night in custody, and was released on conditions the next day.

They say they also arrested a man, but he fled in a vehicle.
