Plans for third rainbow crosswalk in Port Hawkesbury continue

Port Hawkesbury‘s mayor says the town will get a third rainbow crosswalk as soon as they’re able to improve safety near the proposed site.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton says the next rainbow crosswalk will go in by the community park, adding to the two current crosswalks already in place by SAERC and the NSCC Strait Area Campus.

After September’s regular town council meeting Tuesday, Chisholm-Beaton told The Hawk they’re still trying to make the area safe by working on traffic and speed reduction in that area.

“What we’re doing right now is kind of ratifying exactly where would be the safest place to install a crosswalk,” she said. “Once we determine where those speed bumps belong and we determine where’s the safest place to cross, then I think we get out the cans of paint and create a rainbow crosswalk.”

Chisholm-Beaton said safety is their primary concern.

She said it’s important to support members of the LGBTQ community.

“It’s a great show of diversity and pride and inclusivity,” she said. “I think it would be lovely to have all kinds of rainbow crosswalks around town.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they’ll install the crosswalk once they’re confident the area is safe.
