Warden says election means Inverness odor solution not coming soon

A foul odor in Inverness has the community reeling.

The Warden of the Municipality of the County of Inverness says they won’t be able to do anything about it until the election is finished, and that means it couldn’t be fixed before spring.

Betty Ann MacQuarrie tells The Hawk, staff are trying to resolve the wastewater plant issue.

“They’re doing everything possible to get it running at a pace where an odor is not present in the community, but it’s going to have to be a complete upgrade of the system,” she says. “It is an emergency situation that has to be rectified… A major upgrade is the only thing that’s going to correct that.”

MacQuarrie says a funding application to upgrade Whycocomagh’s wastewater system was recently approved, but similar funding for the wastewater plant in Inverness was denied.

She says federal reps told her the municipality could reapply in the next round of funding, but that won’t be until after the election, which means a best-case scenario for the upgrade would be spring.
