Mulroney says young people should look for leadership during campaign

A former prime minister says he has some advice for students in the upcoming federal election- look for leadership.

Brian Mulroney, a StFX class of ’59 alumnus and a one-time Central Nova MP, was in Antigonish for the opening ceremonies for his namesake building, Mulroney Hall, Wednesday afternoon.

After, Mulroney said young people should support the candidate they think will make the kind of country they want to live in.

“Forget the platforms and all that stuff- it’s the leadership they’re looking for on important issues or vision for the future,” he said. “This is all about leadership- you’ve got to find a place and an individual who expresses a vision of Canada for the future of Canada that’s going to make it better.”

Mulroney said you should vote for the candidate whose vision for the country is the one you want to see become reality.

He said young people should look for decisive leadership on the issues they care about.

“What I mean is decisive leadership on major issues,” he said. “We don’t have to sit around and say ‘We’re a third-rate nation’- we can assume leadership roles, and we did, and it can be done again.”

Mulroney said he’s glad our country has strong, young leaders for people to follow.
