A whale carcass which washed ashore in Inverness Co will not be moved for a necropsy.
The dead juvenile blue whale was discovered last week on the headland at Sutherland’s Cove.
The Marine Mammal Response Society says they’ve been working with the DFO since it was reported to them.
They say they’ve been trying to get the DFO to tow the animal to a nearby beach for a necropsy.
The society’s Executive Director, Tonya Wimmer, tells The Hawk the DFO told them Wednesday they won’t be moving the animal.
“Given the wind that’s been in there, it’s been really tricky for a boat to be able to get near it, but it looks like we don’t even have a vessel that would be big enough to tow the animal all the way up to the other beach where we were going to do this,” she says. “Which is a shame, we’ve been working for about a week or so to try to figure out how to be able to tow this animal and get it to that safe location.”
Wimmer says they can’t conduct a necropsy with the animal at its current location because it’s too remote, inaccessible for equipment, and unsafe.
She says a team is visiting the site to take samples and collect information to determine what they can without a necropsy.
