Concern with Reeves Street’s lost advance greens going to premier

Port Hawkesbury town councillors say they’re still looking for answers on why advance greens were removed from the construction plan for the Destination Reeves St. project.

Councillors voted to send another letter to provincial officials- this time to Premier Stephen McNeil- at October’s regular town council meeting Tuesday.

The letter is a copy of the same one sent to Lloyd Hines, the province’s transportation minister and the MLA for Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie, regarding the removal of light upgrades from the plan.

After the meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the town’s mayor, told The Hawk she doesn’t think the upgraded lights are a lost cause yet.

“I think it’s still fairly early days, and I think what we’re hoping to do is have those conversations with NSTIR as partners on the Destination Reeves St. project to see if maybe we can negotiate- how do we get either one or both sets of lights and just have those initial conversations.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they want upgraded lights at Pitt St. and Reynolds St.

She said they’re ready to put in the work.

“Council is very interested in that original plan,” she said. “We will have those conversations with NSTIR in hopes that we can get as close to that original plan as we can.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they’re happy with how the work is going overall.

She says residents will be relieved to have construction crews off the street when line painting is finished.
