Mayor says new emergency plan helped get through aftermath of Dorian

Port Hawkesbury’s mayor says the town’s new emergency management plan worked exactly as it should in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

After Tuesday’s regular council meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton said the town wasn’t hit as badly as many parts of the province, especially Halifax.

Chisholm-Beaton said, even though they were lucky enough and only implemented the smaller measures of the plan, it made the actions required to respond to the effects of Hurricane Dorian clear.

“That emergency management plan was key, because we knew who are responsible for set tasks,” she said. “Should it been worse, then we would have been establishing an emergency management centre here at the civic centre. If there were flooding or something more severe, then we would have a plan for that, and we would know the dance steps, we’d know exactly what to do.”

Chisholm-Beaton said, because of Dorian, they’ll be including drills for extreme weather when practicing the plan going forward.
