Local sports preview (Saturday)

The StFX men’s hockey team is on home ice for AUS action.

The X-Men host the Moncton Blue Eagles.

StFX (2-0-0), who is perfect to start the 2019-20 season and is ranked third in the country, sits in top spot in the seven-team conference with four points, a point up on Moncton (1-0-1), who is tied with Dalhousie for second.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 7 p.m.

 

The Cape Breton West Islanders host Halifax for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The Islanders (2-2-0), who have split their first four games of the season, are tied with the Valley for fourth in the eight-team league with four points, three points behind Cole Harbour for third, and a point ahead of sixth-place Pictou Co.; Halifax (6-1-0) sits in top spot with 12 points.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

The teams meet again in Port Hood Sunday afternoon.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League are in New Brunswick for weekend action.

The Northern Selects visit the Fundy Nationals at 3 p.m.

The Selects (4-0-0), who are perfect to start the season, are tied with Halifax for top spot in the seven-team league with eight points, four points up on the two teams tied for third; the Nationals (1-2-1) are tied for fifth with three points.

The teams play again Sunday morning.

The Panthers play the EDZA East Rockets at 7 p.m.

The Panthers (1-2-1), with one win in their first four games, are tied with Fundy for fifth with three points, a point behind the two teams tied for third, and a point ahead of the last-place Rockets (1-3-0).

The teams meet again Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cabot Highlanders host the Voyageurs in the first of back-to-back games in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (1-3-0), with one win in their first four games, are tied with Fundy for sixth in the eight-team league with two points, two points behind the three teams tied for third, and a point ahead of last-place Cape Breton; the Voyageurs (4-0-0), who are perfect, are in top spot with eight points.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 6 p.m.

The teams square off again in Port Hawkesbury Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas are on home ice in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host the South Shore Lumberjacks.

The Novas (3-1-0), winners of three of their first four games of the season, are tied with the Lumberjacks (3-1-0) for third in the 12-team league with six points, two points behind the two teams tied for top spot, and a point ahead of fifth-place Truro.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 3 p.m.

The Novas travel to Tantallon to take on the Gulls Sunday morning.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in Quebec for the second time in as many days.

The Cape Breton Eagles, coming off Friday night’s win in Baie-Comeau, visit the Chicoutimi Sagueneens; the Halifax Mooseheads, who lost in Chicoutimi Friday night, visit the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

Both games get underway at 5 p.m.

 

The StFX women’s rugby team is home for AUS action.

The X-Women host the Acadia Axewomen.

It’s a match-up of the top two teams in the four-team conference- StFX (4-0), who has a perfect record and is ranked second in the country, is in top spot with eight points, two points up on second-place Acadia (3-1), who is ranked eighth nationally.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; StFX won the first 38-14 in Wolfville Sept. 27.

A win guarantees the X-Women top spot in the conference, as well as a first-round playoff bye that would put them directly in the AUS championship.

Kick off at StFX Stadium is 3 p.m.

 

The StFX cross country teams are in Wolfville.

They’re taking part in the Acadia Meet.

The X-Men cross country team is ranked ninth in the country.

The women start at 12 p.m.; the men’s race gets underway at 12:45 p.m.
