Local sports preview (Thursday)

The Battle of Cape Breton resumes in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The Cape Breton West Islanders host the Sydney Rush.

The teams are at the bottom of the standings in the eight-team league; the Islanders (2-8-0), losers of six straight and seven of the last eight, are seventh with four points, a point up on the last-place Rush (1-9-1).

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 7 p.m.

It’s the first game of the season between the teams, and the first half of a home-and-home series; they meet again in Membertou Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cape Breton Eagles host the Victoriaville Tigres in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Eagles (10-3-0), who are on a four-game winning streak, are tied with Rimouski for second in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 20 points, a point behind Charlottetown for top spot, and a point ahead of fourth-place Chicoutimi; the Tigres (3-8-3) are seventh in the eight-team Western Conference with nine points.

It’s the first game in the two-game season series between the teams.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.
