Driver charged in fatal Antigonish Co. crash has case adjourned

The case of a woman facing impaired driving-related charges in relation to an Antigonish Co. crash that left a boy dead has opened in court.

Police say officers responded to the scene of the crash on South Side Harbour Rd. in Lower South River early one Sunday afternoon in July.

They say three people were in the vehicle; one passenger, a three-year-old boy, died at the scene.

Tara Breukel, 32, was not in Antigonish Provincial Court as her case opened Wednesday morning; her legal aid lawyer said Breukel was at a B.C. treatment facility, and she was still waiting for Crown evidence.

The election-and-plea hearing was adjourned until Jan. 15.

The Crown requested a publication ban in the case, and the judge granted it; that means we can’t tell you the victim’s name, or any information that could identify him.
