Leak floods Baddeck water treatment plant, leads to two advisories

A major leak in Baddeck’s water treatment plant has led to the village issuing both water conservation and boil water advisory.

CAO Megan Cooper says it has left the village’s water tower with a dangerously low water level, a regular level of 24 feet is down to only three feet.

Cooper tells The Hawk they discovered the leak this morning.

“Water was draining from the treated water storage tank into the water treatment plant and flooded the building,” she says.

Cooper says, despite the low water level, the water utility now reports there is enough water for emergency services.

She says NS Power had to be called in before staff could get into the building.

“NS Power… cut power to both the treatment plant and the well,” she says. “Until that happens, no individual or crew member can safely enter the premises.”

She says it was only after the power was shut off that staff were able to get into the plant to assess the damage.

Cooper says the initial estimate is between two to three days, at least, to get the plant back in working order.
