Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Antigonish Bulldogs are on the road in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

The Bulldogs, lost their game against Pictou Co. at home Friday night, visit the Brookfield Elks (1-10-0), who have one win their first 11 games of the 2019-20 season to sit last in the Fred Fox Division.

The teams have met once so far- Antigonish won that game 7-2 at home in September.

Game time is 4 p.m.

 

The Cape Breton West Islanders are home for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

They host the Valley Wildcats.

The Islanders (3-11-0), with losses in back-to-back games and nine of their last 10, are last in the eight-team league with six points, three points back of Sydney for seventh; the Wildcats (7-10-1) are fifth with 15 points.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 6 p.m.

The teams split the first two games in the four-game season series in Berwick in September; they close out that season series when they play again in Port Hood Sunday afternoon.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League open a home-and-home series.

The Northern Selects host the Panthers.

The Selects (8-0-0), who are undefeated to start the 2019-20 season, are second in the seven-team league with 16 points, two points behind Halifax for top spot, and five points ahead of the third-place Panthers (4-3-3), who have just one loss in their last seven league games.

It’s the first game in the four-game season series between the teams.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 1:30 p.m.

The teams meet again in Membertou Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas play the first of back-to-back weekend home games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host the Cole Harbour Storm.

The Novas (8-4-0), winners of back-to-back games, are in a four-way tie for second in the 12-team league with 16 points, three points behind the Gulls for top spot, and two points ahead of sixth-place South Shore; the Storm (4-7-1) are tied for 10th with nine points.

It’s the second of three regular season games between the teams- the Novas won the season opener between the teams 7-2 in Cole Harbour in September.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m.

The Novas host Truro in Antigonish Sunday afternoon.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

Heatherton takes on the County Outlaws at 7 p.m., while the St. Croix Angels play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on home ice for divisional matchups.

The Cape Breton Eagles (12-5-1), losers of back-to-back games and three of their last four, host the Charlottetown Islanders (11-5-3) at Centre 200 in Sydney.

The teams have met once so far in their nine-game season series- Cape Breton won 3-2 in overtime at home in October.

It’s the first of back-to-back home games for the Eagles, who host Drummondville Sunday afternoon.

The Halifax Mooseheads, coming off a loss against Drummondville at home Friday night, host Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and the last-place Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

Halifax has won the first two games in the nine-game season series.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The StFX women’s hockey team, with wins in back-to-back games, hosts the UNB Varsity Reds in AUS action.

It’s the second game in the four-game season series between the teams- UNB won the first 2-1 in Antigonish in October.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

StFX travels to Charlottetown to play UPEI Sunday afternoon.

 

The StFX basketball teams host the UPEI Panthers for the second time in as many nights in AUS action in Antigonish.

The Panthers won Friday night’s game between the men; Panthers won the women’s game.

The women tip off at 6 p.m.; the men start at 8 p.m.

 

Some members of the StFX cross country teams are competing for a national title.

The X-Men and X-Women are at the U Sports championship in Kingston, Ont.

The women’s race gets underway at 2 p.m.; the men start at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, Paul MacLellan of the X-Men has been named the winner of the U Sports men’s cross country community service award.
