Local sports preview (Wednesday)

It’s a busy night on the local sports schedule.

Both StFX hockey teams are in AUS action.

The X-Men host the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the Keating Centre in Antigonish.

StFX (5-5-2), losers of four of the last five, is fifth in the seven-team conference with 12 points, a point behind Moncton for fourth, and two points ahead of sixth-place UPEI; Saint Mary’s (8-4-0), with wins in the first two games of the five-game season series between the teams, is third in the conference with 16 points, and ranked seventh in the country.

The X-Women are in Halifax to take on the Dalhousie Tigers.

StFX (7-4-1), with wins in three of the last four, is fourth in the eight-team conference with 15 points, a point behind UNB for third, and three points ahead of fifth-place St. Thomas; Dalhousie (3-9-0) is sixth with six points.

It’s the third game in the four-game season series between the teams- the X-Women have won the first two.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals host the CEC Cougars in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

The Royals (2-1-0), winners of two of their first three to start the season, are tied with Hants East for second in the five-team league with six points, four points behind Northumberland for top spot, and four points ahead of the fourth-place Cougars (0-1-2), who are winless through three.

It’s the first game in the four-game season series.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 6:30 p.m.

 

The Halifax Mooseheads visit the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (9-10-1), who have one win in their last three games, are eighth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 19 points, two points behind Baie-Comeau for seventh, and two points ahead of ninth-place Saint John; the Armada (9-9-2) are fifth in the eight-team Western Conference with 20 points.

It’s their first of two regular season games.

Game time is 8 p.m.

 

The StFX basketball teams travel to Halifax to square off with the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The X-Men (2-1) have won two of their first three to start the 2019-20 AUS season, while the Huskies (1-3) have one win in their first four; the X-Women (1-2) have lost two of their first three, while the Huskies (2-2) have split their opening four games.

It’s the first games of the season between the teams.

The women start at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.
