The Cape Breton West Islanders play their third and final preliminary round game in the major midget division of the 2019 Monctonian AAA Challenge.
The Islanders, who lost their opening two games of the tournament, play PEI’s Kensington Wild.
Game time is 8:45 a.m.
The Cabot Highlanders play in the semi-finals this afternoon against Armada at 4 p.m.
The Novas take on the Kings at 2:45 this afternoon.
The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League are in action.
The Panthers play the Fundy Nationals in Membertou at 5 p.m.
The Panthers (4-5-3), who have lost back-to-back games and three of their last four league games, are third in the seven-team league with 11 points, nine points behind the Northern Selects for second, and two points ahead of the two teams tied for fourth; the Nationals (2-10-2) are last with six points.
The teams, who split the first two games in the four-game season series, meet again in Membertou Sunday morning.
The Northern Selects visit the EDZA West Reds in Fredericton at 5:30 p.m.
The Selects (10-0-0), winners of their first 10 league games, are second, two points behind Halifax for top spot, and nine point ahead of the third-place Panthers; the Reds (3-8-1) are sixth with seven points.
It’s the third game in the four-game season series between the teams- the Selects won the first two by a combined score of 18-1 in New Glasgow in September.
They square off again in Fredericton Sunday afternoon.
The Dr. J.H. Gillis Royals are on the road in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.
They travel to Westville to take on the league-leading Northumberland Nighthawks.
The Royals (3-1-0), who have won three of their first four regular season games to start the 2019-20 season, are second in the five-team league with nine points, three points ahead of third-place Hants East.
The teams have met once so far in their four-game season series- the Nighthawks blanked the Royals 6-0 in Westville in October.
Game time is 6:30 p.m.
There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.
The St. Croix Angels square off with the County Outlaws at 7 p.m., while the Pleasantdale Panthers play the Heatherton Warriors at 8:30 p.m.
Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.
The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams wrap up their respective road trips.
The Cape Breton Eagles, coming off a loss in Shawinigan Friday night, visit the Victoriaville Tigres.
It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams- Cape Breton won the first 4-3 in Sydney in October.
The Halifax Mooseheads, who lost in Val-d’Or Friday night, meet Beaver Meadow’s Ryan MacLellan and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
It’s the first game in their two-game season series, and their first game since they met in the 2019 Memorial Cup final in Halifax, won by the Huskies.
Both games get underway at 8 p.m.
The StFX women’s hockey team is on home ice for AUS action.
They host the St. Thomas Tommies.
The X-Women (8-4-1), who have won back-to-back games and four of their last five, are four points behind UPEI for second in the eight-team conference with 17 points.
StFX has won the first two games of the four-game season series against St. Thomas.
Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.
The StFX basketball teams finish off an AUS home-and-home series against the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Antigonish.
The Huskies men (2-3) and women (3-2) beat the X-Men (2-2) and X-Women (1-3) in the opening half of the home-and-home series- and the first of four regular season games between the teams- in Halifax Wednesday night.
The women start at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.
