The MLA for Inverness says officials with the provincial government can work with their municipal counterparts to shore up their emergency response.
Allan MacMaster says he’s heard a number of concerns regarding municipal water service during extended power outages following Hurricane Dorian in September.
He says constituents are asking who is responsible.
MacMaster tells The Hawk it was important to define the responsibility, so he asked the province’s municipal affairs minister.
“Somebody has to be captain of the ship- in this case, it is the municipal units,” he says. “I think the response from the minister was somewhat positive, in that his department is there to work with municipalities- they are responsible for these matters, but they’re not alone.”
MacMaster says emergency management for water systems is a municipal responsibility, but there are programs in place to support municipal officials in emergency preparedness.
