Walking trail funding request sent back

A request for a funding partnership to build a half-kilometre walking track at the Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Centre in L’Ardoise has been dismissed without a motion.

Councillor Jason MacLean presented the request to share one-third of the cost at November’s regular Richmond Co. council meeting Monday night.

MacLean said heath centre reps have already applied for $5,000 from provincial officials, they were planning to fundraise an additional $5,000 dollars, and they were requesting $5,000 from municipal officials to cover the expected $15,000 project cost.

Warden Brian Marchand said the proposal sounded like a grant.

“There are some accounts that not all monies get spent out of, so it’s just if we make an exception, we better be prepared for others,” he said. “We open the door for this one, we’re opening the door for others, and we’ve cut hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money.”

Marchand said they haven’t actually denied the request.

He said they’ll need more information before they could consider an exception.
