Local sports preview (Thursday)

The Battle of Cape Breton resumes in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The Cape Breton West Islanders host the Sydney Rush in the first half of a home-and-home series.

It’s a match-up of teams at the bottom of the standings in the eight-team league- the last-place Islanders (4-16-0), who have lost five straight and seven of their last eight, have eight points, a point back of Sydney (4-16-1) for seventh.

The teams have split the first two games in their seven-game season series.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 7 p.m.

Cape Breton West and Sydney square off again in Membertou Saturday night.

 

The Dr. J.H. Gillis boys hockey team is in action for the second time in as many nights in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

The Royals, coming off Wednesday night’s home game against Hants East, travel to Truro to take on the CEC Cougars (1-3-2), who have one win in their first six regular season games to sit last in the five-team league with five points.

The teams have split the first two games in their four-game season series.

Game time is 6:30 p.m.
