New EMO position coming to Antigonish

A new, three-way partnership is bringing a full-time emergency management coordinator to Antigonish.

Antigonish Co. councillors voted in favour of the position at December’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night.

After, Owen McCarron, the warden of the municipality, said the town and county already have a part-time coordinator.

McCarron said the new position brings in StFX as a partner.

“This is an opportunity to kind of pull all three groups together, and put together a plan so that we’re in a state of readiness, regardless of the type of emergency.”

McCarron said talks have been taking place for as long as two years, so the new position isn’t in response to Hurricane Dorian.

He said the September storm did show the importance of being prepared.

“We’re seeing weather patterns changing, and (it’s important) to have someone that can coordinate,” he said. “With the university onboard, it’s significant, because they are a big player in our community.”

McCarron said it will be a two-year contract.

He said they hope to have the position filled by April.
