Councillors say they want crosswalk as part of Arichat facade revitalization

Richmond Co. councillors say they want another important addition as Arichat’s facade revitalization project nears completion- a crosswalk.

Alvin Martell, the deputy warden of Richmond Co., asked councillors to have their public works director contact provincial transportation officials to request a crosswalk between Arichat’s school and nearby businesses at December’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night.

After, Brian Marchand, the municipality’s warden, told The Hawk students already cross in that area, and they want to protect them.

“One of the councillors felt that there was a need, especially with the children from the school going across.”

Marchand said it isn’t the first time a crosswalk in that area has been requested.

He said that previous request was denied.

“Another councillor mentioned our public works director had already looked into it, but the motion is to have him look into it again,” he said. “Take it maybe to the next level if it’s deemed that it’s needed.”

Marchand said they would contact Lloyd Hines, the province’s transportation minister and the MLA for Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie, if required.
