People across the country will take a day to talk about mental health.
Wednesday is Let’s Talk Day.
Members of university and college campuses are doing their part to raise awareness- and funds- for mental health initiatives, and StFX is no different.
Vishalle Wells, the university’s residence education coordinator, says student staff members will lead discussions, host activities, and get people involved on social media.
Wells tells The Hawk they’re trying to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
“Having this conversation in the open and saying ‘It’s okay to not be okay’ really lets students know that it’s okay for me to reach out if I’m struggling,” she says. “It is not weird, or there isn’t anything wrong with me if I reach out and say ‘Hey look, this is what’s going on- I need help’.”
Wells says it’s especially important for first-year students, who are often away from home for the first time.
