Inverness council votes to censure councillor for code of conduct violations

Inverness Co. council has taken action against a councillor for code of conduct violations.

At Thursday’s regular council meeting, Councillor Jim Mustard made a motion to censure councillor John MacLennan.

He said it came from actions taken by MacLennan over the last the last month and a half.

Mustard said MacLennan had been acting inappropriately by sharing confidential information from in-camera meetings and his municipal email account.

“There’s contracts being talked about, there’s wages being talked about, it’s more than just the CAO, so we just need to, if we’re doing this work, it has to be respected at that level,” he said. “We had worked with the councillor to see if there was some way to get that resolved and in not finding a way then we put in place this motion.”

Mustard said MacLennan will no longer be allowed to attend in-camera sessions, represent the municipality on committees, or access his municipal email.

He said the restrictions will remain in place until council is satisfied MacLennan will no longer violate the code of conduct.
