Kelloway named to second Commons committee

The Member of Parliament for Cape Breton-Canso says he’s very pleased and honoured to receive a pair of committee appointments.

Mike Kelloway has been named to the Commons’ Standing Committee on Health, as well as the Standing Committee on Justice.

His appointment to the health committee came in January; the justice committee appointment was announced Friday.

Kelloway tells The Hawk health committee members have already had their first meeting.

“We stated that we want to have every Canadian to have access to a family doctor or primary health care team, (and) setting national standards for access to mental health services is very important,” he says. “We talked about the investment in the platform of $6 million to the province in areas of home care and palliative care.”

Kelloway says that first meeting took place Jan. 29.

He says the coronavirus was a big topic of discussion as well.

“We hit the ground running on that particular item, meeting with professionals on how we’re handling our approach to this virus, in terms of health and global security.”

Kelloway says members of the justice committee haven’t met yet.

He says that first meeting will take place the week of Feb. 17.
