Health officials testing for TB after confirmed case in local school community

Provincial health officials have begun testing for tuberculosis cases related to a local school.

Nova Scotia Health Authority Eastern Zone Medical Officer of Health Dr. Daniela Kempkens says a person connected to the East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy has a confirmed case of TB.

Dr. Kempkens tells The Hawk TB is contagious but requires significantly more exposure time than something like the flu to transmit.

“Everybody who has been identified as a close contact, and where we would say they should get tested, has been contacted,” she says. “People who haven’t heard from us at this point have not been identified as a contact and should not worry about getting tested.”

Dr. Kempkens says a first round of testing is done, and they’ll do another in two months to confirm no one has developed symptoms in that time.

She says they’re not concerned about an outbreak yet.
