Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Antigonish Bulldogs close out the 2019-20 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League regular season with back-to-back road games.

The Bulldogs (23-6-1), who have lost two of their last three, are second in the six-team Sid Rowe Division with 47 points, a point back of the Miners for top spot; the Blues are last in the division.

Antigonish has won the first three games in the four-game season against Cumberland Co.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs play their final regular season game when they visit Eskasoni Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cape Breton West Islanders will try to stay alive when they host the Cole Harbour Wolfpack in game six of their Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoff series.

The Wolfpack lead the best-of-seven, first-round series 3-2 after a 6-2 win in Cole Harbour Wednesday night.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood is 4:30 p.m.

A Cape Breton West win sends the series back to Cole Harbour for a seventh and deciding game Sunday morning; a loss ends their season.

 

The two local teams in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League open their respective best-of-five, first-round playoff series.

The Panthers (6-12-6), who finished the regular season third among provincial teams with 18 points, visit Halifax (19-3-2), who was second with 40 points, and had a pair of wins and a pair of ties in the four-game season series between the teams.

Game time is 3:30 p.m.

The Northern Selects (23-1-0), who lost once in the regular season and finished in top spot with 46 points, host the Penguins (5-16-3), who were fourth in the province with 13 points.

The Selects swept the four-game season series between the teams.

Puck drop at the Pictou Co. Wellness Centre is 6 p.m.

Both series resume Sunday.

 

The NSSAF Highland Region Division 2 hockey tournament continues at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

The five teams from the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League are all taking part- the host SAERC Saints, the Dalbrae Dragons, the Richmond Academy Hurricanes, the Eskasoni Warriors and the Inverness-Baddeck Academy Rebels.

The tournament opened with a pair of games Thursday, and four more games Friday; there are four games on Saturday’s schedule.

Richmond Academy takes on Dalbrae at 12:30 p.m., Eskasoni meets Inverness-Baddeck Academy at 2 p.m. then Richmond Academy at 5 p.m., and Dalbrae squares off with SAERC at 6:30 p.m.

The semi-final and championship games are Sunday.

 

The Antigonish Rural League playoffs resume with a pair of games at the Antigonish Arena.

The St. Croix Angels square off with the County Outlaws at 7 p.m.; the Angels won the opening game in the best-of-seven, first-round series 2-1 Feb. 15.

The Heatherton Warriors play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:30 p.m.; the Warriors won that series opener 4-1 Feb. 15.

Games three in both series are Feb. 29.

 

Both of the province’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on home ice.

The Cape Breton Eagles, coming off Friday’s home win against Saint John to sit fourth in the 10-team Eastern Conference, host River Denys’ Colten Ellis and the Rimouski Oceanic at 7 p.m.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams; Rimouski won the first 9-2 at home in October.

The Halifax Mooseheads host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at Scotiabank Centre.

The Mooseheads (19-31-4), who have one win in their last 10, are ninth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 42 points, nine points behind Quebec for eighth, and 13 points ahead of last-place Acadie-Bathurst.

The teams have met once already in their two-game season series; Halifax won that game 3-2 in Rouyn-Noranda in November.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

It’s the first of two home games in as many days for the Mooseheads, who host Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart, Beaver Meadow’s Ryan MacLellan and Moncton Sunday afternoon.

 

The StFX women’s hockey team opens their AUS semi-final series against the UPEI Panthers on home ice.

The X-Women (22-5-1), who ended the regular season with wins in 12 straight and 16 of the last 17, finished second in the eight-team conference with 45 points, earning a bye through the first-round of conference playoffs; the Panthers (20-7-1), who beat Moncton in the first round to advance, were third with 41 points.

StFX, winners of three of the four games in the season series between the teams, is ranked seventh in the country; UPEI is fifth.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

The winner will have a chance to advance to the AUS final when the best-of-three, second-round series shifts to Charlottetown for game two Tuesday night.

 

The StFX track and field teams remain in New Brunswick.

The X-Men and X-Women are taking part in the AUS championship in Saint John.

The competition opened Friday; it wraps up Saturday.
