Municipal councillors in Richmond Co. say they won’t join their counterparts in a growing number of communities who are sponsoring participants for a local women’s leadership school.
They discussed a proposal by Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, to fund spots at the Leadership School for Women for participants from Richmond Co. during February’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night.
James Goyetche, the municipality’s councillor for District 1, said he didn’t care about gender, race, or cultural background.
“They have the same right as anybody else to present themselves for municipal council, but I don’t agree, and I don’t think it would be right for me to ask the taxpayers of Richmond Co. to pay to encourage somebody to run against me,” he said. “I’m against any kind of funding for this type of schooling.”
Gilbert Boucher, the District 4 councillor, said he agreed with Goyetche, and anyone who wanted to run should put up their own money.
Councillors made no motion on the proposal at the meeting.
