Mayor says new gym off to great start

Port Hawkesbury‘s mayor says their new gym has already had great success.

Councillors heard from the town’s CAO at March’s regular council meeting Tuesday night, the first since YMCA of Cape Breton reps shut down their Port Hawkesbury branch in February.

He reported 150 members registered since the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre Fitness Centre opened, with 65 memberships from Sunday’s open house alone.

After the meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of the town, said it’s just the start.

“There’s certainly been a lot of great energy that has been expressed from citizens who are here and have already joined,” she said. “We hope that membership will grow- healthy citizens make for healthy communities.”

Chisholm-Beaton said town officials will continue to operate the gym for six months.

She said they’ll evaluate how the facility is doing and discuss options going forward, including the possibility of leasing the space to another private fitness operator.
