New food bank coming to Guysborough

Guysborough is getting a new food bank.

The municipality’s new 2020-21 budget, approved at March’s regular council meeting Monday afternoon, includes a $4.2 million capital plan.

$100,000 for construction of a new food bank is part of that plan.

After Monday’s meeting, Vernon Pitts, the warden of the municipality, said the new facility is badly needed.

“They didn’t have room for storage- they were storing different food items here, there and everywhere throughout the community,” he said. “They shouldn’t have to do that- the way council looks at it is we want them contained within the one building.”

The new location will be at the bus garage near Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy.

Pitts said there’s an additional $10,000 in the budget for immediate funding to help stock the shelves.

“We have to look after the disadvantaged,” he said. “We also have to look after our residents, we have to look after our families, we have to look after our friends and our neighbours.”

Municipal officials say they’ll host an event to get contractors and residents to help build the facility at some point in the future.
