MODG councillors approve budget

Officials in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough have a new fiscal plan in place.

Councillors approved their $17 million budget for 2020-21 during March’s regular municipal council meeting.

After, Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, said he’s pleased with the document.

“There’s been no change in regards to tax rates (and) service fees,” he said. “There’s been a small increase in regards to district-based grants.”

Tax rates hold steady at $0.71/$100 of assessment for residential customers, and $2.68/$100 of assessment for commercial.

Pitts said maintaining rates sends a clear message to residents.

“We are very comfortable in the position we’re in,” he said. “We have sufficient funds within our reserves that if something was to happen, we can roll with the punches for a while.”

Ratepayers had five-cent increases to their residential and commercial taxes in the past two municipal budgets.

The 2020-21 budget is roughly $1 million less than the 2019-20 budget.
